Rubella virus belongs to the genus Rubella virus of the family Phippoviridae, which is a family of herpes viruses. Rubella virus is transmitted through the respiratory tract and has an incubation period of approximately 2-3 weeks. The clinical symptoms of rubella are like those of a common cold, with the usual symptoms of a cold and swollen lymph nodes behind the ears and under the occiput, followed by a light red papular rash on the face that spreads rapidly throughout the body. Rubella infection during pregnancy may cause fetal death or congenital rubella syndrome (CRS).
